Football clubs in Viken and Oslo - conversion from gas boiler to energy wells for artificial turf pitches

Six sports clubs in the Oslo area have participated in a concept study to evaluate transition from gas to geothermal heated artificial turf pitches. Their current gas-fired plants are getting old, and the sports teams have for a long time considered various renewable solutions as a replacement for the current gas boilers.

In the concept study, we conclude that a solution with 600 m deep, closed loop wells combined with an adapted heat pump reduces the energy consumption for heating football pitches by more than 80 %. The heat pump also provides a low power requirement from the power grid. Deeper wells reduce the area required and the number of well meters compared to shallow wells, which makes it possible to establish a well park next to an existing pitch, even where the available area is relatively limited.
